Mikhail’s effort Extradite co-opts a loop from Bob James’ Nautilus to propel an electrically charged trade-off of quick fire rhymes between Gibbs and guesting Roots member Black Thought. Opening pair, Rearview and Narcos, both produced by Blair Norf, are blessed with the type of roughshod trap-style beats that perfectly complement Gibbs’ technically adept, 2Pac-esque drawl. ![]() It’s a ruse which may have backfired but has resulted in his most cohesive effort yet. Gibbs clearly thrives on the challenges of collaboration though, and for this follow up album he’s spread the production duties far and wide. ![]() It was an odd pairing, with several outstanding moments, though ’lib’s cerebral, idiosyncratic productions occasionally jarred with the rapper’s nihilistic street talk. Piñata, last year’s collaboration with Madlib, helped propel Freddie Gibbs from rank industry outsider to fully-fledged underground rap star.
